From Dress to Skirt: Easy Alteration Tip
Here’s an unconventional alteration, but it was such a simple fix to a problem I had, so I wanted to share:
I have had this dress for ten years, and stopped wearing it about five years ago because I didn’t like the tube top look. I was trying to think of ways to rework it and came up with a really simple solution: fold the top down into the bottom and wear it as a skirt.
I also decided to make a slit in it, which, if you have any skirts or dresses that you want to make a slit in, here is how I did it:
1. Flip the dress inside out
2. I found a seam that ran right where I wanted my slit to be, so I just cut right along the stitch line
3. If there is not a seam in the place where you want to cut a slit, lay the dress flat and cut a straight line up where you want it to about halfway between your knee and hip (this is about as far up as I would recommend going, but do what you’re comfortable with!)
4. If the cut has jagged edges or there are excess strings hanging out, fold it under about half an inch so the patterned side wraps around and either hand stitch it together or just send it through your sewing machine.
As always, let me know if you try this or have any questions!
